Causal Agent:
Crinivirus (Cucurbit Yellow Stunt Disorder Virus - CYSDV)
| Characteristic Symptoms: | |
| | The virus induces interveinal yellow spots in mature leaves of melon. |
| | The yellow spots enlarge and may eventually coalesce, resulting in the yellowing of the entire leaf except for the veins which remain green. |
| | Infected leaves will sometimes roll up and become brittle. |
| Conditions for Disease Development | |
| | The virus is transmitted from plant to plant by the whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci. |
| Management and Control: | |
| | Use resistant varieties, if available. |
| | Remove weeds that serve as alternate hosts. |
| | Increase water and fertilizer application. |
| | Control whitefly population by using plastic mulch, insect traps and/or use of insecticides such as imidacloprid (e.g. Solomon®, Confidor®, Admire®, Provado Supra®), dimethoate (e.g. Perfekthion®), metamidophos (e.g. Matador®) and cartap hydrochloride (e.g. Padan®, Dimo®, Vegetox®). |
